CINCINNATI, Ohio (WKRC) - As word spreads that the company that makes Necco wafers could close, sales have surged.
According to Newsweek, The New England Confectionery Company Factory announced in March that it could stop operating if it didn't find a new owner. The candymaker has been in business since 1847.
On the Necco Facebook page, a message reads "Fans, we have received an astounding amount of emails concerning the future of our company. I will do my best to get back to you all. All I can say is that we are unsure of our future but hopeful for a buyer to keep this sweet and nostalgic brand alive for many more decades. We thank you for all your love and support!"
While fans are snatching up the candies, haters are taking to Twitter.
In addition to Necco wafers, the company's closure would also put a stop to Sweethearts, Mary Janes, Clark Bars and Squirrel Nut Zippers.
